What are the conditions for French naturalisation?
You must in principle have resided legally in France for 5 years (reductions possible), hold a valid residence permit, prove a B1 level of French, have stable and sufficient resources, a main residence in France, adhere to the values of the Republic and show good character (no disqualifying convictions).
Can the 5-year period be reduced?
Yes. It is reduced to 2 years for people who have successfully completed two years of study at a French higher-education institution, or for important services rendered to France. Some situations even exempt you from any residence period (refugee, former member of the French forces, francophonie).
Does a criminal record prevent naturalisation?
Certain convictions block naturalisation, notably a prison sentence of at least 6 months without suspension or offences against the values of the Republic. Each file is subject to an individual review of the good character condition.
Does meeting the conditions guarantee naturalisation?
No. Naturalisation by decree is a discretionary decision of the administration. Even when all conditions are met, the administration may refuse or adjourn. The test above gives a first orientation, not a guarantee.
