The API is usually issued automatically when your residence permit expires while your renewal application, filed on time, has not yet been decided.
It proves you are lawfully resident and extends, for its duration, the rights attached to your former permit.
Duration and renewal
The certificate is generally issued for 3 months, renewable if processing continues. It ends as soon as your new permit is ready or a decision is made.

Which rights it maintains
The certificate maintains the rights linked to your former permit:
- Right to stay: you remain lawfully resident during its validity.
- Right to work: maintained if your previous permit allowed it.
- Social rights: it generally lets you prove the continuity of your rights to institutions.
- Travel: like the récépissé, it does not guarantee re-admission after a trip outside France.
